Head Start staff and administration gathered together the week before classes began for preservice training and some fun! Our Head Start theme this year is Superhero Headquarters, and no phrase better describes a room full of men and women who will dedicate the next nine months to teaching and loving the children we serve. Aside from being fun, pre-service provides our staff with important information about the new school year and brings everyone together to help kick off the year with enthusiasm and team spirit!

Showing true team spirit, our administrative staff donned their capes and rolled out carts to serve lunch to the large group. Being served by the leadership was a specific suggestion made by staff during feedback from the prior year’s event.

Staff had the opportunity to purchase additional superhero themed t-shirts and raffle tickets for prizes of learning materials. Funds from shirt and raffle tickets sales are used to satisfy a federal requirements of providing one dollar per child served by the program. The success of the event resulted in raising all the funds needed to meet this requirement! Attendees were touched by a few words given by Mrs. Angela Carr, Head Start staff member.

She explained that while Head Start staff are not your “typical” superheroes, they do have superpowers. Those superpowers are a kind word, a smile or a helping hand. And their tools are a safe haven, a warm meal and time. She impressed on each person how important these things are too many of the children we serve each day. And that they should never underestimate the difference they can make in a child or family’s life. Staff left for the day with this message and ready to serve our Head Start families. Remember – all superheroes don’t wear capes!
