Reading is Fundamental

The Reading Is Fundament (RIF) Program is one of the nation’s oldest and largest children’s literacy organizations. For nearly 44 years, RIF has been putting books into the hands and homes of our country’s most vulnerable children.  RIF encourages and motivates children to be lifelong learners, and train caring adults to transform children into readers and book lovers.

CSI Head Start has been a RIF sponsor for 20 years.  We distribute over 5,000 free books per year in a 12-county service delivery area to low-income, at risk pre-school children.  Along with three free books per child each program year, the child and family also receive reading motivational activities; parent trainings on emergent and family literacy; and resources to promote reading as a priority.

Most low income families do not have books and reading materials in the homes.  RIF allows the pre-school child to select their own book free of charge, take it home, and start or expand their home library.   For approximately $7.50 per year per child, CSI Head Start is working to ensure future educational success for our children.
