Food, friends, and old-fashioned fun made for a perfect picnic July 11 at the Jeff Davis Senior Center in Hazelhurst.
Susan Wiley, County Coordinator for Concerted Services Inc.’s Jeff Davis center said a total of 40 seniors from her center and the neighboring CSI center in Bacon County came together for the event.
“The Bacon County center had hosted a Valentine’s Day celebration for us, so we thought it would be nice to have them visit our center. And in the summer a picnic seemed like a fun theme,” Wiley said.
Picnic-goers were treated to summer favorites including cool drinks, hotdogs and hamburgers, baked beans, coleslaw, and a variety of desserts. They also enjoyed popcorn.
According to Wiley, the event offered fitness fun for everyone. “We played lots of traditional games including, bowling, ring-toss, balloon dart board, cake walk, and find the (most) safety pins in the oatmeal,” she said.
However, those who turned in top performances weren’t the only winners. Each participant went home with a gift box and a prize.
Wiley attributed the event’s success to donations from the community as well as some of the senior center participants from both counties.
“We are thankful for the donations we received from Handy Andy’s, Papa’s Cabin, Walmart, Gary Newman, Googe’s, Willard Rains, and our seniors who donated items for the picnic,” she said.
What’s on the agenda for CSI’s Jeff Davis senior center for August?
“Starting August 10, we’ll be offering a Diabetes class that will run 8 weeks. It will be an opportunity for people with diabetes and prediabetes to get a lot of helpful information on how to manage their condition. The instruction will include hands-on activities and games, so it will also be fun,” Wiley said.
The class is open to the public. However, participants must register in advance. Area seniors who want to register for the class or to get information about becoming a participant at the Jeff Davis senior center can call Wiley at 912-375-3603.
